GRAPHIC PROPS DESIGN
Paul Jeinris, a pianist at the star-bound Hollywood Plaza Hotel in 1935, was arrested after a housekeeper discovered baffling amounts of drugs inside his workplace piano. Claiming his innocence and amiably hinting at a lack of presently incriminating proof, Jeinris negotiated a surveilled 'hotel room arrest' for the duration of the investigation. By morning, the suspect was nowhere to be found.
To graphically construct the fictional story of Paul Jeinris, I put together some key props. These include a criminal record of arrests and prosecutions (RAP) sheet, a telegram, a newspaper cover, folders, a note, a piano music sheet, drug-filled vials, and a room key.
PAPER: 120g ‘straw’ paper for the RAP sheet and telegram, 130g ‘Skin’ white paper for the ticker tape telegram message, 110g recycled ‘Bellula’ paper for the newspaper, scraps for the note and room key, and Canon Pixma photo paper to print the mug shots.
STAMPS: Numbers and letters rubber stamps with red, green, blue, and black ink pads.
ACCESORIES: Small vials, glass key tags, and silver book corners used on the RAP sheet.
TECHNIQUES: I aged and creased the papers with an oil-based cream. On the RAP sheet, I used some reddish brown eyeshadow mixed with acetone dissolvent and just slightly brushed the mixture on the edges for a bit of a rusty look.
